Sixteen-year-old Grace Fortune is an orphan and she seemed to be unlucky until now in Forlorn by Gina Detwiler. Grace had been orphaned at a very young age when her parents died in a car accident. She remembers being saved and she believes an angel saved her that day. The story opens with gunfire erupting in the school cafeteria when Grace is celebrating her sixteenth birthday with her friends. She is saved this time by Jared Lorn, a boy from the school whom Grace feels resembles an angel with his golden eyes and light skin. Grace finds herself falling in love with Jared, whom she finds out is a Nephilim; an offspring of the union of angels and humans. They are descendants of The Watchers, a cursed race of fallen angels. His father, Azazel, is bound in the Abyss with the rest of the Watchers. Grace knows she has to save Jared but will she succeed in this?
Forlorn by Gina Detwiler is not the usual guardian angel story, but is about friendship, love, faith, courage, and sacrifice. As the plot progresses, readers see a group of teenage friends and their guardian angels trying to free Jared from the curse of his father, Azazel. I like the way the author weaves angels, demons, the power of prayer, spirituality, suspense, and action through this story, making it a compelling read. There are many twists and turns in the plot which keep the suspense alive and pull readers into the story. All the characters have been well formulated and the story highlights the power of music, through a song Grace knows that can be used as a sort of defense to keep the demons out.
