Forbidden Reign is a fantasy novel by Amy Earls and is the second entry in the Under His Wings series. The plot follows protagonist Pero Moshe who, upon returning to her world following the events in the previous book, is lured into the Forbidden City by the call of duty. She must face the dangers ahead with only her former adversary as a companion. As the dangers and intrigue of her new surroundings unfold, the choices she must make will affect those she cares about, those she’s never met, and those who’ve wronged her in the past. This is an outstanding read, spinning a story that manages to balance being epic in scope and yet intimate in characterization. Pero’s journey through the expertly crafted narrative leads to thoughtful and meaningful development that will stay with readers long after they finish.
Amy Earls’ prose is vivid and witty, portraying a stunning world and complex emotions with equal skill and always finding room for a dash of humor where appropriate. Forbidden Reign manages to perform a rare feat; expertly mixing an exciting, thrilling adventure with the meaningful exploration of philosophical ideas. Discussing Christian ideas in a work of speculative fiction is done best when characters apply the ideology to their actions rather than their words. Earls has wisely created a lead who demonstrates her values – and by extension the merit of those values – in the choices she makes. An exciting adventure with excellent world-building, a thrilling narrative, a philosophical edge that trusts readers to reach their own conclusions, and a hero you can’t help but root for, I recommend this book to all.
