Pamela Koch shares her story of how faith, hope, and unconditional love can overcome grief in her inspirational memoir titled For Goodness’ Sake: The Story Behind the St. James 9/11 Bereavement Support Group. The author begins by detailing her own life story, from childhood to her marriage and family, to her work with hospice patients and families. Her interest in grief and bereavement support, unfortunately, coincided with the loss of two close family members. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, shattered the lives of her New Jersey town and her parish, St. James. When asked to develop a bereavement support group for the families who lost loved ones that day, it was a natural progression of her calling.
This engaging book is both inspirational and informative. It is obvious Pamela is truly a thoughtful, highly organized and loving woman who wishes to facilitate healing and solace for grieving people. Her description of the first year of group meetings after 9/11 demonstrates how difficult the “first” holidays, birthdays and other events in the life of a family are. Her plans and activities are faith-based and could be a springboard for all faith-based bereavement support groups. The sharing of her own health crises provides an important reality – compassionate people who bring encouragement to others also experience life’s struggles. There is wisdom emanating throughout this book. One example is how her use of helpful volunteers enriched the program. For Goodness’ Sake: The Story Behind the St. 9/11 Bereavement Support Group by Pamela Koch is truly a treasure!
