For Every Season is the third book of the Vines and Orchards series by Cindy Woodsmall. For those unfamiliar with the series, there is a synopsis to aid in the understanding of the current book. Rhoda Byler has been forced to leave her Pennsylvania orchards after they were destroyed by a tornado. She and her group have now settled in Unity, Maine and have planted an abandoned acreage which should soon yield its first crop. Problems begin when Rhoda develops feeling for her partner Samuel while being pledged to his brother Jacob. Jacob's absence while caring for a woman and her small child has created opportunity for closeness between Samuel and Rhoda. Neither knows what to do about the feelings they have for one another. When Jacob returns to the community, he is immediately aware of what has occurred and he sets out to take back his promised bride.
Much of the book has to do with what has gone before and unless the reader gets a firm grasp of this at the onset of reading, there may be some confusion. At times, I was disturbed that Rhoda simply could not get in touch with her real feelings, but overall, she is a wonderfully strong Amish woman who firmly believes in the concept of right and wrong. I loved the depth of the conversations between Rhoda and Samuel and I did like the way the author developed the somewhat shallow character of Jacob. Anyone wanting to read a touching story of determined, good people will love this book.
