Florida Gold by Robert Allen Morris tells the story of Jack and how he became the CEO of Tropical Juices. The story start with 73-year-old Jack reflecting back on his life before we go back in time to his birth in 1915 to Irma Sue, the 15-year-old daughter of a turpentine farm manager. Her parents, Pete and Margaret, take the child on as their own. Pete is killed in an accident and Margaret and Irma Sue are forced to move, leaving Jack behind with friends. Life treats them well and they both marry into good families. Then Jack is snatched and forced into the fields as a child laborer. He escapes and helps the Feds break the camp. With money from an unexpected source, he starts his own juice business. The story takes us through his service in WWII and how he grew his business, dealing with family sorrow and tragedy along the way, as well as the ups and downs of running a business.
Florida Gold by Robert Allen Morris was one of those ‘wow factor’ books. An amazingly told story, with real feeling put into the words. It’s an unforgettable story, one that I could read over again and still take something new away from it. The characters are real and fit the story, the plot was well thought out and researched, and the whole book flows properly. Robert Morris is clearly a natural born storyteller and I would love to read more from him.
