Flight: Notes on the Out-of-Body Experience by Nancy Stephan is a metaphysical memoir detailing the author's multiple conscious and unconscious OBEs. The book begins with Stephan describing her earlier life and the Christian cornerstone that has shaped her. Her first OBE is a turning point and when she shares it with her pastor, she is told that it is best to keep it to herself, which she does. As the experiences happen more frequently she starts to compartmentalize two different types: unconscious, where the OBE is induced while sleeping and she deems to be a Godly experience, and conscious, that happens while she is awake and is feared to be the work of the devil. Over decades the profound nature of the OBEs take on a new shape, new meaning, and new points of view on what they actually are, and the author now shares them openly, freely, and in clear detail.
Flight is the first book I have read on out-of-body experiences that are removed from the more commonly recognized near-death experiences. Nancy Stephan digs deeper and not only shows us what it feels like to have soul and body disconnect, but how it is not usually just her looking down at her physical form in the way most people have heard. Stephan is frequently able to move, leave the environment her body is in, and embark on travel and experiences that transcend time, space and dimension. She is able to move undetected, for the most part, among those in their bodies but with a heightened awareness of their own energy. I was intrigued by a visit Stephan makes in the encounter titled Trapped Woman. She is in the dishevelled home of a hoarder with a woman sitting in the center of filth, and the home surrounded by a moat of spikes. The energy is so heavy and oppressive that Stephan must leave the woman to be helped by an “other” with the frequency to do so. There are so many experiences that Stephan describes and it is really incredible to be taken along for the ride. Flight is a well-written book that I believe readers who are open to it will find fascinating.
