In Flexible Wings by Veda Stamps, Summer Stevenson has had enough. She is tired of all the moving around and the constant worry about her parents and making new friends. Being an army brat is not easy. Other people see your parents as heroes, but to her they are her parents and there is not much she can do about changing people’s perspectives. Her family recently moved to Valencia, California. She was not ready to move, not yet, but here she was, moved to a new city with no friends to speak of.
Things looked up a bit when she joined the competitive swimming team, but it turned out she was the least talented. Add the bullies at school and her mother’s deployment and Summer is not in a very good place right now. She was ready to give up, but the swimming coach will have none of that and neither will her grandmother. Taking strength from their conviction, Summer is ready to face the music and do battle. But can she really find courage to face her fears about her mother who is oceans away? Can she find the talent in her that her coach sees?
There are some novels that are a joy to read; they demand a second read before you can write a review. This novel was one of them. Flexible Wings was such an amazing novel. Summer was real, her issues were real and her courage was real. There was no sugar coating and everything was lifelike. We all know that mixed raced children have it hard, but no writer has been able to portray that effectively (apart from Toni Morrison). Veda Stamps did that and I love her because of it. The illustrations were fantastic. they helped me understand the setting and characters much better. Five stars!
