Flame and Form is the opening novel in the Draghans of Firiehn series by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson, a story that transports readers into a completely different and exciting world. A novella-length story and a breezy read at that, it is a romance with powerful paranormal underpinnings. The protagonist is Brienne whom we meet at the beginning of the story in a tavern in Eile, but when she comes to the aid of a draghan — a fire-breathing creature from another realm about to be executed by the villagers— all Brienne wants is to save the creature. Little does she know that she has just helped a powerful shapeshifter, capable of taking the form of a man. And how her blood heats up when she is beside him, and how can she resist him?

This story is very imaginative and atmospheric and I enjoyed the names of places and characters and the magical world into which the author thrusts her characters. The story is gorgeously told in prose that flows gracefully and Jenna Elizabeth Johnson does an impeccable job in exploring the emotions of the protagonist, allowing her feminine side to come out beautifully through the narrative. The author writes scenes that are focused, like the one in which the people deliberate on what to do with the creature, torn between killing it and making sport of it. The story becomes interesting when Brienne offers to take the draghan and deliver it to the Morrigan. From that moment, she won’t feel the same again in its presence. With strong plot lines and an enjoyable pace, Flame and Form is a wonderful treat for fans of paranormal romance and readers who enjoy quick, emotionally charged reads.
