Fitzduncan's Fortune by John J Spearman is an exhilarating story that takes place in Aquileia during the Middle Ages. The adventures of Casimir Fitzduncan continue when Fitzduncan becomes a target for assassin Aloysius Fenwick. Aloysius is hired by Fitzduncan’s stepmother to kill him, ensuring his stepbrothers would succeed their father, Duncan Barry, Earl of the Eastern March. Fitzduncan evades Aloysius and takes on a case which begins a new adventure and takes Fitzduncan across the ocean. He is also enlisted by Thomas whose inheritance is threatened by his uncle Robert Gibson who bribed Judge Spadewell. Fitzduncan returns to his fiancée, Lady Lucy Darling, only to discover that even more excitement awaits him when his father pays an unexpected visit with news that could change his entire future. Lucy and Casimir are to share their wedding with Freddy and his betrothed, Greta. As it is, in this novel, things don’t always go according to plan.
An absolute delight to read, Fitzduncan’s Fortune is filled with adventure, intrigue, and suspense. The interesting array of characters are all well-defined with some unusual characteristics and personalities including a butler who is on a mission to poison Fitzduncan. Author John J Spearman has a wonderful writing style, easy to follow, fast-paced and exciting. The scenes and locations are beautifully depicted and take the reader back in time to when life was a lot simpler but also tougher to survive, given the challenges of ocean voyages and invasion by enemies. Fitzduncan’s Fortune is a real page-turner and impossible to put down once started. I especially enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the way people lived before electricity, technology, and everything we take for granted. All round, a fantastic novel, highly recommended to people of all ages who enjoy thrilling stories. I look forward to the next installment of Casimir Fitzduncan’s adventures.
