I knew Fit for Life by Valerie Allen was a short story going in, but I was disappointed that it cut off in the way that it did. I mean that in a good way. When I started reading, I was wondering if this book was inspired by the TV show Golden Girls. There was a clear Dorothy and a Blanche, but I didn’t have enough details of the other two women to determine who would be Rose or Sophia. I felt nostalgic when remembering those fair ladies and was hopeful this tale would follow a similar path. I believe anyone who reads this book will be left thinking about a woman or group of women who are relatable to this age group. Hysterical moments filled with some eye-rolling as well.
Valerie Allen provides humor in this novella and she succeeds more toward the end as our main character Sharon shares the story of her morning with her supportive husband Arthur. There was quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor going on as the couple chatted back and forth, and I could easily see Allen turning Fit for Life from being a short novella into a full-length novel quite easily. With good grammar and sentence structure throughout, Allen did leave me wishing for a longer story, so she was a big success in that department. I think Valerie did a great job with Fit for Life. I could easily read an entire novel or even a series about these women.
