Author Biography

Several years ago we met through a mutual friend. Within two hours of talking, we knew we both wanted to work together in writing this novel. Both of us were from different backgrounds and experiences, yet we shared the same basic philosophies in life that created an instant connection and friendship. Our work on this fiction novel was very much enjoyed and we hope you enjoy reading it. We also hope that the novel also encourages thought and contemplation regarding the basic philosophies that underlay the characters, their stories, and the story break chapters.

Fishing With God by Shane Hutchison and Chris Gordon is a spiritual novel that will make you reflect upon your life and how you have been living it. This novel isn’t really about one character. It is about a multitude of characters that find peace. This novel is about the unpredictable nature of our lives; one moment these characters are the happiest they could be and the next, they are destroyed. Or they are lost ... but the next moment they could be happy because they found what really matters in life.

There is hope, anguish, forgiveness, chances, choices, and so much more. It is a life. Literally. Although Ordin is the main character, the novel is so much more than that. What really moves the reader is the fact that the writer did not leave anything untouched. In these 300 or so pages, you will read a lifetime of suffering, pain, joy, and ecstasy. These emotions are shown in their most raw form. You can feel these emotions and how Ordin feels when he has to make a choice. I loved the fact that this novel made me work it out.

The writing style is very similar to that of Paulo Coelho. You will have to draw your own understanding; you don’t have everything handed to you, which is pretty much what life is like. It is refreshing, enlightening, and very encouraging. It makes you want to be brave enough to make those choices you have been putting off. Like Ordin, maybe one of them will take our lives where they should be and where we want it. A very good, enlightening and refreshing read.

The writing team of Chris Gordon and Shane Hutchison takes you on a spiritual journey in their novel Fishing with God. Ordin’s life had been marked by one fatal accident. His life now a void, he finds solace on the lake. It has become a ritual, a time to be alone, his fishing with God. One day he decides it is time to move on with his life, to get beyond the pain and seek out forgiveness. Ordin’s choice results in a chain reaction; although he is alone, he coexists. His decision touches the lives of others. Held within his story lie the stories of others, and on one fateful day they all intersect at a crossroads of choice. Each one experiences an epiphany, an awakening, an opportunity to take ownership of their lives. Some find redemption and hope, a new beginning, while others remain caught in the web of their self-centered choices, lost within their darkened souls, shadowed by what could have been.

Chris Gordon and Shane Hutchison come from different backgrounds; they meld together in a collaborative effort and write a strange piece of fiction in Fishing with God. They crafted a drama of truth-seeking, by creating a story and a cast of unique characters who embody, portray and define their idealistic philosophies pertaining to life. The chapters are short, jumping from character to character, exchanging points of view during the same time period. This writing technique moves the story quickly. However, the action abruptly halts when the chapters portray the voice of the narrator. These inclusions of philosophical thought cause the reader to stop and ponder in a non-fictional manner, thus creating an odd narrative.

The theme of Fishing with God focuses on free will, choice, and the existence of God. Life is not easy; we are challenged by difficult decisions. Sometimes we don’t even have the opportunity to decide, something out of our control takes over, and we are left in the aftermath of an unprecedented event. We experience conflict and pain, hope and defeat, and sorrow and joy. However, we have the choice to decide whether our scars will be “beauty marks or birth defects.” This extraordinary novel ends with a question, leaving the reader wondering what they believe.
