Firesight by Jessica Deen Norris is the first book in the Dragon Guardian Chronicles. Everyone expected the arrival of the Dragon Guardian to create harmony within the world, but in a world where Shadow Knights are in search of a particular type of mage, this is not the case. Tiber’s family wasn’t powerful but that did not stop his parents from being killed by the emperor and completely changing his world. His only goal now is to stay hidden until he can devise a plan to avenge his family. He never expected the opportunity to show itself after meeting the mysterious Luci nor did he expect to bond with a young dragon. His new friends will help him as he uncovers surprising secrets and discovers a plan the Shadows have in store for him.
The fantasy comes to life through fine attention to detail that creates an engaging and dangerous environment for Tiber’s adventure. Fantasy elements are important to establish the arc of Tiber’s journey and a variety of beings populate the world such as knights, Shadows, dragons, and mages. The premise is set for Tiber with a hero’s journey to fulfill. Friendship is important to the growth of Tiber’s character and the people he meets help him understand the growth he needs to experience. Characters such as Luci embrace him with support, humor, and guidance in interactions that give heart to the story. An adorable dragon bound to quickly steal your heart is a wholesome and endearing character who sneezes smoke and has a genuine bond with Tiber. The pace is quick with Tiber always trying to stay a step ahead. Balancing out the physical adventure of good versus evil is an emotional arc that is beautifully incorporated.
