Fiona’s Knight of Dreams by Sharon McGregor is set in the small town of Timber, shortly after the Second World War. Fiona lives at home with her mom, dad, and her grandmother while her brother, Bertie, who was injured in the fighting, is still away, unable to settle after a period in rehab. Fiona is a part-time librarian with no real idea of what she wants to do with her life. Her friends, other than one who is married with her first baby, have settled to train for jobs like nursing or teaching. Fiona dreams of a knight on a white charger. Instead, the outspoken, accident prone Fiona meets Reverend Charles Redpath, young, single and not in the least the conventional minister Timber mothers of unmarried daughters assume him to be.

Sharon McGregor’s gentle romance, Fiona’s Knight of Dreams, paints a picture of life in small-town America just after WWII. Fiona is a part-time librarian and all the books and their authors fit the period perfectly. Accident prone and more outspoken than she intends, Fiona’s dreams of a knight on a white charger fade when she meets Charles, the new church minister. It is he who finds notes hidden in a borrowed library book and, as intrigued as Fiona, connives to find out more. Is he the reason Fiona gets up earlier, takes more care when she chooses her clothes for the day, and persists until she tames her unruly hair? Clever, full of insight, with well-drawn characters, this is a novella that held my interest to the end.
