Finding Purpose is the first book in the Mylin Valley Series by Angela E. Powell. Heather Fletcher runs a successful horse rescue ranch on the outskirts of the small town of Mylin Valley. However, when a traumatized horse called Littlefoot arrives at her ranch, she finds that she has met her match. Complicating matters is an eight-year-old boy named Xavier suffering from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), whose parents bring him to Fletcher Horse Rescue in the hopes of treating his condition. Attending to both Xavier and Littlefoot takes over Heather's life as she finds herself going against the wishes of her father. Additionally, her relationship with her older brother, Scott, becomes strained due to an underlying secret. Can Heather achieve her goals, or will she be overwhelmed?
A touching slice-of-life story that follows the members of a working-class family as they navigate life, Finding Purpose perfectly demonstrates how following your dreams can lead you to discover your true purpose in life. Despite the overwhelming challenges faced by Heather, she is undeterred in her relentless pursuit of helping others, even at the cost of great personal risk and alienating her loved ones. Author Angela E. Powell tells a moving tale that pulls at your heartstrings and makes you introspect. The narrative flows by like a gentle breeze. I found the characters down-to-earth and highly relatable. Heather's relationships with her friends and family provide the narrative thrust to the story, and you find yourself rooting for her almost from the get-go. Highly recommended.
