Fever is the first entry in A Songbird Novel series by Melissa Pearl, a gripping contemporary novel with sophisticated characters. Ella can't explain what just happened. She's come to Chicago with her boyfriend to finish college. Her future has always been thought of in connection with him until she hears the voice singing over her shower wall. Little does she know that the guy is equally absorbed by her voice as well. Cole can't help but be mesmerized by the sweet voice that interrupts him during his morning shower. Now he vows to find out who this girl is. He doesn't know yet that the voice belongs to the girlfriend of his roommate, a gorgeous girl who grabs his attention. Can there be more than the thrilling connection of their voices in a duet?
The first thing that caught my attention is the author's gift for character. Melissa Pearl plunges into the emotional depths of the characters and writes them in a way that readers can feel these characters. For instance, Ella Simmons doesn't trust quickly. She is hesitant and uncertain and her confidence isn't strong. It is interesting how a song can establish a connection between two characters and this gets stronger from the first moment they discover each other’s voice. The prose is gorgeous, composed of well-crafted sentences that capture the drama in the story.
I love romance with strong plot lines and this author creates one in Fever. I wanted to see how the conflict played out and wanted to get to the moment when Cole finally discovers the person behind the voice. The writing is suspenseful and the story is told from the different points of view of the characters, creating suspense and curiosity in readers that make them want to know what happens next in the shift in POV. It is a delightful read for fans of contemporary romance with richly developed characters.
