Ferret Adventures is a wonderfully charming story that's fun and educational. Author Lorie Mishelle R. cleverly weaves vocabulary lessons into a delightfully fun story about ferrets. Ferret is the smallest of seven brothers and sisters, but he's the best at using big words. Ferret lives in a pet shop and he learns the big words from listening to humans, who have no spots or stripes, but they have different colors of fur. Told from the point of view of Ferret, he loves adventures and he learns to get out of his cage at night. He fell asleep one night, but ended up back in his cage not knowing how he got back in.
Throughout the adventures of Ferret, a young reader will learn vocabulary words that are placed in parenthesis, although not dryly. The definitions are also told from Ferret's point of view so that learning the meanings will be fun for kids. It's not only the story, characters, and vocabulary lessons that make this book appealing. The illustrations just blew me away. They are colorful, vivid and well placed. They do as they should and enhance the story. What also makes the illustrations appealing is that they aren't computer-generated. It's so refreshing to pick up a children's book and see artwork that is done by hand. The illustrations aren't bogged down with distracting background, and they are simplistic, yet very appealing.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that is both educational and fun. It's a LOL story (an acronym that the author also uses and explains in the book). It's a great book to read aloud to pre-readers or early readers, and it's a great book for those who are intermediate readers. Well done!
