Having self-esteem helps children to accept themselves. When their self-esteem is balanced, they will feel proud of what they can achieve, which is why they must learn to value their abilities and build confidence in themselves. Feathers in the Wind * El talingo camaleón explores this. The story concerns Jose, a bird known as a grackle. At first, we are introduced to his environment and friends. He describes his life and his exciting experiences. There came a time when Jose wondered what it would be like to be another type of bird. He set out on a journey to meet other birds, such as vultures and pelicans. Jose discovered that pretending to be something else is not as easy as he thought. Through his encounters, he learned much and had a great adventure to share. Al Sprague also includes questions for children to reflect on different aspects of the book.
Feathers in the Wind * El talingo camaleón is a marvelous bilingual book. Children will learn important values, and at the same time, they will also learn Spanish. The vocabulary is enriching, including many terms related to birds. This book is best for children who have some knowledge of Spanish because the stories alternate between English and Spanish. The illustrations are simple but artistic and apt, which is why I liked them. Al Sprague's narrative is entertaining, and all the experiences of Jose, the grackle, illustrate the underlying lessons. The author provides real-life information about the grackle. This book is as educational as it is entertaining, and children will certainly enjoy it.
