Fault Line by TL Scott is an action-packed crime novel that grips the reader from the beginning and doesn’t give a moment’s respite until its explosive denouement. We meet Bill back in his hometown, a small town. He has returned for his little sister’s wedding and with him are his friends from the army, looking forward to a peaceful break from the war. But what should have been a peaceful break is quickly transformed into an unexpected battle when a man forces a woman down on her knees in the middle of the street, a gun against her face. Bill and his army buddies act by instinct to defend the woman, but quickly find themselves embroiled in a war against a powerful gang that is deeply rooted in the small town.
This is a tale that involves local law enforcement, the FBI, and skilled army officers at loggerheads with a ruthless gang. It is fast paced, intelligently plotted and skillfully written. Fault Line is cinematic and TL Scott’s prose entices the reader — it is atmospheric and captures elements of the setting brilliantly. The introduction of the small town, with the cool temperature after the sweltering heat, the smell of fresh-cut grass mixed with the morning breeze evokes an atmosphere that is conducive to relaxation. The dialogues are expertly written and while they entertain readers, they play a powerful role in plot and character development. I enjoyed the author’s sense of the economy of word, the relaxed style of writing and the aptness when it comes to word choice. So, aside from the excitement of the action that moves the story, there is the beauty of prose that will, undoubtedly, appeal to readers.
