A devastating scream and a mysterious murder bring to a climax Sarah’s trauma in Fatal Family Affair by Leila Kirkconnell. This is the beginning of detectives Martin and Doyle’s mission to find the murderer. What appears to be a straightforward homicide turns out to be more complicated than any of the detectives would have originally guessed. Navigating between the complex aspects of James Hiller’s life and putting different pieces of the puzzle together, Martin and Doyle work tirelessly to capture Hiller’s killer. Sarah Hiller, on the other hand, battles a difficult past, trying to make sense of normal life and heal from the pain inflicted by her own mother. Further, she constantly longs to know and build a relationship with her long-lost father, who seems to show no signs of ever coming back into her life.

From the point I started reading Fatal Family Affair by Leila Kirkconnell, I knew I had to stick with it to the end. There is no doubt that Kirkconnell is a gifted writer. I liked the character development in the story. Leila Kirkconnell develops each persona sufficiently. The key characters in Fatal Family Affair are adequately elaborated and have ample effect on the story line. Sarah particularly evoked sympathy in me for people who have dealt with the effects of mental illness. Kirkconnell skillfully develops each scene, making the plot of the story feel complete and captivating. Fatal Family Affair is a hair-raising murder/mystery tale that is tantalizing and left me wanting more of Leila Kirkconnell’s work.
