Evil Hears is a work of fiction in the epic fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres, and it forms the second novel in the Warriors and Watchers Saga. It is aimed at the young adult reading audience and contains mild fantasy violence. Penned by Sandra Woffington, this sequel to Evil Speaks can be read as a standalone story, as our magnificent seven young protagonists return to Tartarus to prevent the evil lords from opening various dark and dangerous gates that could bring about the destruction and overthrow of Earth. Each with their own personal battles and difficulties to overcome, we follow Kami’s dilemma when she is left behind, and faced with the unique opportunity to rescue her mother.
Author Sandra Woffington delivers a superb and action-packed fantastic adventure that delivers on every promise. I found the protagonists to be particularly relatable for YA audiences, and having so many different personalities to focus on helps to structure the different threads of the plot as the storylines merge together seamlessly over time. What begins as seven very individual journeys is gradually molded into an epic coming of age, and the formation of a powerful warrior team that’s very exciting indeed. I was particularly taken by how varied and representative the characters are, and how sensitive the portrayal of physical conditions and ailments is because those characters are not simply used for a quick gimmick. There’s a deep-set reality in their everyday struggles that grounds the fantasy elements in something emotive and believable. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Evil Hears to YA fantasy fans everywhere.
