Author Biography

Mike Breen is an indie fantasy writer. He has a background in theatre (favorite playwrights tend to be a bit dark and Irish). He used to write simple songs with good friends, and still listens to the same punk bands that he did in high school. Mike likes truthful fantasy, books that are fearless, and British TV shows. When not writing, he is usually thinking about writing or trying to figure out how a mandolin works.

Ever the Night Road by Michael Breen is a fantasy that will take your imagination to new heights. Dagny Losh is seventeen years old. She has been living with the Benzara family in Old Rork for quite some time. Alex Benzara was a friend of her brother Morgan, which is how she ended up with them after leaving The Rakesmount. When her brother succumbed to fever and her sister died after The Rakesmount was washed away, Dagny felt alone and very much out of place in this world. Then she meets the Naverung. Somehow, the roads she takes lead her to the places she needs to be. With an entire world to explore, Dagny is sure to find wealth most could only dream of. Danger and mystery are always around the corner.

Each page reveals a treasure of its own. After being drawn to this book by the cover art, I had no idea of the adventure I was about to embark on. Michael Breen has an amazing gift with words and stimulated my senses on a whole new level. I experienced moments of panic and sheer terror. I felt that the author touched on some deep and personal emotions that we don’t always like to admit, even to ourselves. With a strong female protagonist and other relatable characters, this book is sure to entertain and leave you pondering for days, which is exactly what I did. I feel I need to read it again because I am sure I will find more gems that I overlooked the first time in Ever the Night Road.

Ever The Night Road is a fantasy adventure story by Michael Breen. Divided into two parts, a magical adventure evolves featuring Dagny Losh. Dagny lives with a benefactor, Alex, and his wife and children. Dagny aspires to be an adventurer like her older brother, Morgan, had been. An adventurer, Maris, arrives one afternoon with a treasure and mentions he is going to see Magu Ogden. Jumping at the opportunity, Dagny accompanies him to Ogden’s home. While the men are meeting on the top level, Dagny discovers three boys on the second level. After finding out that she knows Alex, they share that one of their friends, Jorgie, has gone missing after going to the Oracle. She joins Max and Rodolph on their journey to the dark island with a dark castle. Helping Jorgie, Dagny discovers an ancient crow tangled in a net. She frees the bird and they return home. As Dagny begins her next adventure, she's likely to face a greater challenge that will test every belief she's ever held.

Michael Breen penned a magical fantasy that I couldn’t put down. Dagny’s life before living with Alex was full of grief and I understand why she didn’t like to think about it. It is easy to identify the strengths in every person she encounters. I thought the romantic tension between Max and Dagny was recognized by their friends long before they could admit to it. The various places the characters go to are vividly depicted. I could picture smelling the wetness of the caverns, feeling the freezing water, and questioning the statues alongside Dagny. I agree with the rest of the characters when they point out that Dagny’s emotions cause her to lack regard for everyone's safety. The end of the story reinforces this belief but leaves an excellent start for the sequel. I am eager to read the next book. Ever The Night Road is perfect for fantasy readers who enjoy immersing themselves in the adventures of well-developed characters.

In Ever the Night Road by Michael Breen, the reader accompanies Dagny on various adventures, which follow a certain theme and have a core problem. Dagny is one of the survivors of a tragedy during which she lost her family; at least, that is what she thought. We find her living with a famous adventurer, his wife, and children. She grew up in a poor area and now lives in a rather fine neighborhood, but Dagny feels like something is missing, and she wants to go on adventures herself. The opportunity surprisingly presents itself, and Dagny does something rather heroic without being properly prepared. That adventure is only the start of something bigger. Soon, Dagny learns that something she believed about her past is not true - and it changes everything.

I picked up Ever the Night Road by Michael Breen because the cover and the blurb were interesting and caught my attention. Fortunately, the content of the book itself also did not disappoint. In the beginning, I found Ever the Night Road by Michael Breen a little slow and wondered what the overarching theme/problem was. In hindsight, it is pretty clear, but I had to get quite far into the book before it was obvious. Apart from that minor issue, this was a very good book. It has action, creepy beings, interesting beings, a little romance, and exciting developments; I loved the crow and would have liked to learn more about that bird. If you like fairly realistic fantasy, as in not too outlandish, then this should be a good choice for you.

I don’t typically read fantasy books, but I was intrigued by the haunting cover art and blurb. I am so glad I read Ever the Night Road. The author draws you into the lives of these characters and quickly makes you care about them, especially the strong female lead Dagny Losh. The plot is not predictable, and I was impressed with all the twists and turns. Some of the more intense scenes are nail-biters that stick with you. When a lot of other authors describe locations, I tend to get bored. But not with this book. I found the location descriptions to be so vivid and interesting that I could easily visualize them and enjoyed them as much as the dialogue. I know it’s a really good book when I’m a bit sad when it ends, and that’s just how I felt. Can’t wait for the sequel!
