Teaching your children how to swim and about safety is the best way to protect them around pools. Patricia Smith has written several books on children and swimming and in Eva's Imagination, Patricia (Ms. Pat) teaches little three-year-old Eva the basics of swimming. As Eva goes through the swimming lessons, she also learns water safety. Eva uses her imagination to conjure up different creatures such as sea turtles and elephants to make her classes more exciting. Learning how to swim involves learning how to trust. Your swim instructor must be someone you can depend on. Reading this book to your young child can help them learn how to be imaginative, which is part of a child’s learning as they explore the world around them. While parents enjoy spending time at the pool with their children, it is the wise parent who allows a certified instructor to teach the child how to swim.
My mother’s solution to pool safety was, “Never go near the water until you know how to swim.” Her point was that learning to be a good swimmer is vital. Young children should never be allowed to be near a pool alone, which is one of the safety rules that Eva learned. Eva’s Imagination by Patricia Smith is an exciting book encouraging your children to learn to swim. The illustrations in this book are delightful. Children will enjoy pointing out the various animals that Eva imagines in the water with her. While I learned to swim in a class with at least 8 children, I liked the way Ms. Pat taught Eva individually. Personal instruction allows for structuring the lessons to the individual needs of each child.
