Ernest Shackleton's Impossible Ice Journey by Ciara O’Neal is a child-friendly account of the events of Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition aboard the Endurance. O'Neal teaches readers that the ship became trapped in pack ice and was crushed in 1915, leaving the crew stranded with limited supplies. Shackleton and his men established "Patience Camp" on the drifting ice, later reaching Elephant Island. From there, Shackleton and five others embarked on an 800-mile sea journey in a small boat. Upon landing on the wrong side of an island, they crossed hazardous mountains and glaciers on foot to reach a supply station. Shackleton arranged rescue attempts for the remaining crew, initially blocked by pack ice. Aided by the Chilean government, he successfully rescued all 28 men after 127 days.
Ciara O’Neal’s Ernest Shackleton's Impossible Ice Journey is a vivid look at a harrowing tale of survival, leadership, and resilience during one of history’s most extraordinary Antarctic expeditions. The writing is conversational, and O'Neal employs a mixture of proper and phonetic spelling (such as “I betcha”), artwork, photography, and a helpful cartoon crustacean to convey what she presents. For most young children, this will be a book that has to be read over several sittings, which is how we read it as a family. I was faced with an uncomfortable conversation when my youngest asked what happened to the dogs, so caregivers should have a sympathetic way of explaining that beforehand. The sheer volume of details that O'Neal imparts is impressive, and her passion for the topic transcends the pages. Overall, this is an informative little book that packs a big punch.
