Enter My Mind by Shauna Cesar is a refreshingly honest look at mental illness and how it makes the mind think. These 20+ poems might be found dark or morbid by some, but I found them very enlightening and I appreciated author Shauna Cesar letting us look inside her brain. Cesar explains that she was bipolar during her early teens to young adulthood, but didn't know it and didn't understand why strange thoughts were always going through her mind. As an escape and coping mechanism, she wrote about them via poetry which is what Enter My Mind shares with us now.
Strange as it may seem, I found this collection of poetry comforting, but you see, I suffer from Clinical Depression, so perhaps they speak to me a little differently than they would to someone who doesn't understand what it's like to have a mental illness. Enter My Mind by Shauna Cesar has given readers with mental illness some hope and comfort, while allowing those who don't suffer from bipolar disorder a peek into what it's like to have to live with that debilitating disease. The piece titled "Fairytales" explains how "happily ever after" never seems realistic to someone going through what she's been through. "As They Sit" discusses the fear and anxiety of wondering whether others will know about your "disease," and wondering how many actually ever get to be a version of "okay." My cousin deals with bipolar disorder and I am going to recommend Enter My Mind by Shauna Cesar to her.
