End of Morrow is a work of fiction in the historical, intrigue, and mythology subgenres, and is the third novel in the Guardians of the East series. Penned by author J.P. Manning, the work is best suited to the general adult reading audience. The story unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of 1850 AD, where English archaeologist Fred Baker embarks on a perilous journey to claim the lost city of Assur. Armed with ancient guides—the Guardians of the East—Fred delves into the heart of the Ottoman Empire. Simultaneously, in 2300 BC, Kar, another Guardian of the East, strives to liberate a peaceful people from Akkadian rule. Their quests intersect, setting the stage for a clash between East and West, with the fates of the Guardians, the God King, and all of humanity hanging in the balance.
Author J.P. Manning has crafted a highly immersive and well-researched experience for fans of historical fiction and mythology, and I found the whole journey to be a captivating reading experience from cover to cover. There’s a good amount of natural recap in the early chapters to give series fans and newcomers a reminder of previous events, and Manning shows fantastic skill in incorporating the plot into naturalistic dialogue and action scenes for exposition, rather than relying on heavy prose explanations. There’s also a wealth of complex characters with realistic motivations, and I especially enjoyed Fred’s quintessential English-isms. The narrative explores the clash of civilizations and delves into existential questions of mortality and destiny, all with a great pace that never leaves you hanging, but with plenty of thinking space to ponder each interesting discovery and its profound implications for humankind. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend End of Morrow for its immersive and intelligent storytelling. A must-read for historical fiction fans everywhere.
