Ellie & The Rainy Day by Kimberly Davis-Peters is a cute story about a little girl that wakes up and is disappointed to find a rainy day in place of the sunny one she’d hoped to see. Ellie thinks that her day is ruined, but her mother steps in and patiently shows her many ways that the day can still be enjoyed. This story is perfect for preschool-aged children. Ellie & The Rainy Day has bright, engaging illustrations and a simple storyline that is easy for children to grasp. It teaches kids that it’s possible to turn a bad situation around and find the positive. I liked that Ellie’s mom didn’t get annoyed with Ellie’s pouting and stick her in front of the TV to wait out the rainy day. Instead, she used it as a teaching opportunity and made happy memories with her daughter.
I read Ellie & The Rainy Day to my three and six-year-old boys and thought I would share their reactions as well. They listened intently while I read, and my three-year-old emphatically informed me that he loves puddles! My six-year-old is a busy kid that always finds himself bored. I asked him what he thought of the book, and he said, “I really liked how you can still have fun even if it’s raining.” Kimberly Davis-Peters has created a lovable story with the power to teach kids a valuable lesson about perspective and how to face the problems that life throws at them.
