In Ellie and Lou and The Meaning Of Friendship by Kiana Sosa, we are introduced to a mother and a baby elephant named Ellie and Lou. Little Lou is hungry, and his mother didn’t want him to lose hope so she promised him they would eat soon. Times were hard for the elephants and she had lost a lot of her family when they got separated from their herd. They walked for days in the heat finding nothing, not even water. Ellie was worried because Lou kept getting weaker from not eating. They had almost lost hope when they came across their gorilla friend named Sam. Sam knew all too well how it felt to be hungry with no food to eat, so he offered to help them find some food. Soon enough the whole forest was aware of the elephant's struggle and began collecting food for Ellie and baby Lou. Ellie was shocked that all the animals pulled through and helped her and her baby and asked why. The answer was that they helped others when they needed it so it was only right to help them in return. The jungle became a stronger place with all the animals helping one another.
I thought that Ellie and Lou and The Meaning of Friendship was a very sweet and educational read. Ellie and her baby’s struggle to find food is all too real a threat to animals in the wild. With climate change and forests being leveled, many animals are losing their habitats and the food sources they need to survive. In this book, the other animals help Ellie to find food to survive. It teaches children that helping one another out is a good and kind thing to do. The illustrations were also beautifully done and accompanied the story perfectly. Kiana Sosa has created a wonderful children’s book that kids will appreciate and love.
