Ella Mae the Courageous Cheerleader by Stephanie Cameron is the story of a young girl’s battle with bullies, and how she responds by showing kindness and love. The illustrations are bright and eye-catching and perfectly complement the rhymes as the story unfolds. Ella Mae loves her cheer-leading, but others in the team resent her enthusiasm and kind spirit and try their best to undermine her. The story focuses on Ella Mae’s faith in God and how that faith can help her to overcome the difficult times when the bullies try their best to break her spirit. At the end of the book there are questions and helpful Bible references.

It is explained that this is based on a personal story, one that author Stephanie Cameron herself experienced as a young girl. The rhyming helps the story to gently and compassionately explain how faith in God can overcome life issues, such as bullying. It is well known that bullying can occur not only in school, but in social environments, nowadays on social networks, and also for adults in the workplace. So, although it may not have been intended, this is a book that gives hope and encouragement not only to the young reader, but perhaps also to a parent or adult who might be reading the book to or with the child and discussing it at the end. Ella Mae was able to overcome the mean spirit of the bullies and, in fact, not only change her only life, but that of the whole school as their ethos of attitudes to one another changed. This book should be in every classroom.
