Elizabeth Munk lived in The Big Leaf Forest with her mother and brothers, Tom, Ben, and John. It was autumn and the colors were changing in the forest. Elizabeth's mother wanted them to go to the Forest Edge and gather food for the pantry before winter. Elizabeth was excited because it was her first trip to the Forest Edge. Tom, the eldest, did not want to take Elizabeth with them. He thought she was too much of a baby to do anything right. Their mother did not agree with that. She thought Elizabeth was old enough to go out with her brothers and help them gather food. Elizabeth was thrilled and she was the first one to run out of the house. Elizabeth had never seen the forest this close before. When she got back home, her mother realized that Elizabeth had discovered and picked up unusual stuff for the home and it was not berries, nuts, and seeds. What was it? Well, let's read the story to learn what she found.
Elizabeth Munk's Forest Edge Adventure by Faye MacFarland is a magical adventure story of Elizabeth and her first trip to forage for food before winter. The treasures she finds in the forest and picks up for home are priceless, and her experiences in the forest where she climbs trees, goes farther, and digs holes deeper than her brothers are all encouraging for readers to discover the hidden treasures of the forest and nature. Wesley Lowe adds to the magic of the story with his colorful illustrations and makes the Munks' forest trip exciting and enchanting to young readers. The information about the Least Chipmunk at the end of the book is informative. The story highlights how Elizabeth perceives the forest, and finds enjoyment in first raindrops and the beauty of the forest from the top of a tree.
