Ek Navo Divas (A New Day) by Anuja Mohla is a Hindi-English children’s picture book that tells the story of a little boy named Reyan. It follows his day from beginning to end with his mother and father. As Reyan goes about his tasks, readers learn specific words for food, clothes, and shoes. Using simple words that children learn in the first few years of life, the book formats the learning process using three lines on each page. Translated by Priti Gosar-Patil, the first line of text is in Gujarati script followed by the second line in the English transliteration for Gujarati and then the last line is the English translation of the Gujarati sentence. Illustrated by Noor Alshalabi, the colors are vibrant and cheerful, which elevates the spirit of the reader. The artwork is subtly reminiscent of an animated movie that has been captured in still frames, creating a beautiful landscape to pair with the storyline.
Anuja Mohla’s Ek Navo Divas (A New Day) is an amazing educational tool that will help children living in a bilingual household to broaden their language skills while at the same time taking part and enjoying a story about a child just like them. Also included are several fun-filled activities at the end of the book to help with learning words in English and Gujarati. Becoming bilingual is an adventure all on its own, but reading this book brings an extra element of fun and excitement!
