Edie Goes The Wrong Way by Susan R. Stoltz is a delightful children’s picture book. Edie the stingray loves swimming about with the other stingrays but she prefers to go in the opposite direction. She daydreams about exploring the big wide world of the ocean, of going on adventures. But the other stingrays are confused about why she doesn’t want to be like them? Why can't she be a normal stingray and do what normal stingrays do? Edie decides that she is going to do what she wants, no matter what the others say. Is she wrong to be a little bit different? Is it wrong for her to want to go in her own direction? Or should she be just like all the other stingrays?
Written in poetic verse, the story is accompanied by some amazing watercolor illustrations. This is way more than just a story though. Not only do children learn all about the precious wildlife in our oceans, but they also learn that being different isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s okay to be your own person, to go your own way and not be “normal” – whatever normal is! This book is wonderfully written; the poetry flows smoothly and it’s written in a language that its target audience will understand perfectly. And the section at the back of the book is very informative too, with lots of information about the different wildlife in the story. A wonderful book that kids everywhere are going to love.
