The setting of the audio version of "Edge of Dark Water" by Joe R, Lansdale is East Texas in the 1930s. Angéle Masters narrated the audio book. Her voice has made Sue Ellen come to life. Sue Ellen, Daddy, and uncle Gene were fishing with dynamite when they found the body of May Lynn in the deep part of the lake with a sewing machine weighting her down. No one seemed to care that she was dead, not even the constable: no one except Sue Ellen and her two friends Terry and Jinx. Terry was a young child when his father died. His mother had recently married Harold Webber. Webber was very controlling; he and Terry did not get along well. Terry became different since the marriage. Jinx and Sue Ellen were sixteen years old. Jinx was colored. Sue Ellen, Terry, Jinx and Sue Ellen’s mother dug up the body of May Ann and burned it. They gathered her ashes and planned to take them to Hollywood. Sue Ellen stumbled on to some money and kept it. Cletus, Gene and the Constable were hot on their trail. Cletus hired Skunk to hunt them down and retrieve the money. So begins the horror of their attempt to escape the evil that pursues them.
The characters in this book are exquisitely developed. Sue Ellen was a smart aleck and Jinx had attitude. More than once they made me laugh out loud. Cletus and Gene are cruel and evil rednecks, but not as evil as Skunk. The description of Skunk is so vivid that I could almost smell his rotten odor. This book has it all: a bit of humor, suspense and horror. Parts of this book will make the hair stand up on your head. Lansdale has included more twists and turns in this book than a pretzel. I highly recommend this book.
