Author Biography

Monique Piscaer Bailey is a children's book illustrator, artist & art teacher at the Art Zoo studio in Johannesburg, South Africa. (The first book cover she illustrated, she was just twelve years old.)

Her love and knowledge of art grew from watching her father (who was an old-school sign writer) paint in his studio. Her grandfather was a tapestrier for Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands. Today, although married, she continues to honours her father's name and his influence on her work by signing with his surname, Piscaer. He sadly passed away in 2008.

'I breath, eat & live art. It is in my blood & I am part of it too. It is such an integral part of who I am & what I love.'

Making kids laugh with her delightfully, whimsical drawings has led her on the path she is today.

Ed: A Matter-of-Fact, Funny Frog Book by Monique Piscaer Bailey is the story of Ed, the frog. Ed lays her eggs inside a bog and the tadpoles hatch, one by one. They swim and grow and have fun. Then one day their legs pop out and they become froglets. They can now sit on Ed’s favorite stick and she teaches them how their life cycle goes. She also teaches them to take care of the environment and tells them that all living plants and creatures die. ‘Do your part, be a helping hand, To save all creatures of our land’ is an excellent message to all young readers.

Children learn about the life cycle of frogs in a delightful and entertaining way through the eyes of Ed. I like the way she speaks about metamorphosis, the environment, water, and how we all need to lend a helping hand to save the creatures of this world. The illustrations are adorable and they pull readers into the story. They also help children understand the author’s words and concept better when explained through illustrations. Ed makes a good teacher as she explains about metamorphosis, taking care of the environment, and the creatures that live on earth. She also tells them the importance of water in our lives. Meaningful storybooks like this can be used in classrooms for teaching children new concepts and new things, and parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime story-telling. Children need more books like this to makes learning fun, interactive, and interesting.
