The city of New London has a terrible secret. Beneath the serene exterior is a city ruled by an oppressive government known as the Directorate, which uses force and disinformation to keep the populace under control while persecuting any dissenters who challenge the status quo. Sadie, a teenage computer hacker who utilizes her skills to thwart government operations, is one of these rebels. In Milo, she meets another rebel, and they fight injustice together. They want to topple the Directorate and free the citizens but cannot accomplish this alone. In this city where one wrong step could mean the difference between life and death, they need to find partners who share their dreams of freedom. Only time will tell if they succeed in Julie Hodgson’s Echoes Of Tomorrow.
Trust and teamwork are pivotal elements in Julie Hodgson’s dystopian thriller Echoes of Tomorrow. Despite its futuristic setting, the plot resonates with the present times. The cast of characters, mostly young teens, is a subtle acknowledgment by Hodgson of the importance of the youth in instigating positive change. The conversations highlight the constant trust tests among the team members, adding a layer of tension and significance to their actions. Another remarkable aspect of this novel is that each character in Sadie’s team has a unique gift, mostly harmless when utilized independently but relatively robust when they work together. Hodgson’s storytelling style keeps you on the edge of your seat, building suspense as you question who might defect at any moment. With its rapid pace and well-worked subplots, Echoes Of Tomorrow depicts science fiction storytelling at its finest.
