As kids, people always tell us to dream big but, growing up, some of us leave our childish dreams behind by bursting those bubbles. Not Harry Dunkoff, Sam Wade’s main character in Dunkoff. Harry Dunkoff is a 90s kid with dreams of making it big in LA. Thinking that school only stands in his way of becoming the next household literary name, Harry decides to leave home and pursue his writing career. This leads him down a long dark road after all the poor choices he’s made. Dunkoff takes us on the journey of a young boy with big dreams and nothing but the bag on his back.
When I say that this book is a real eye-opener, it is in the sense that, as kids, we think being adults is so easy. That type of thinking makes sure you are in for a rude awakening when the real world decides to burst your bubble. Time after time, I was thinking that Harry would do better, only to be proven wrong and hurt. I liked how Harry’s character was written and it was interesting to see how his mind worked. The story was well-paced and the characters had a dose of cold, hard reality thrown in that I loved. I’m all for having goals and dreams, but along with these dreams, I know that just by manifesting, I won’t reach them. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and commitment. I think that’s Sam Wade’s main message in Dunkoff. If you don’t have a concrete plan, you’ll always end up back at square one.
