What does one do with a silly dog? Well, love him, of course! And, laugh with him, too. Duke was a silly dog, a hound dog, to be more precise. He was adopted from a pound and instantly became an important member of a family. In Wanda Reynaud’s Duke Was a Hound From the Pound, Duke demonstrates a quirky sense of humor; he loves to do tricks for treats and just for the fun of it. He can sing and dance and he makes friends with everyone, four-legged and two-legged and even those without feet, like the goldfish in the family’s aquarium. But Duke is the very best friend to a little girl who loves to do just about everything with her Duke.
Wanda Reynaud’s picture book, Duke Was a Hound From the Pound, is a sweet, curiously funny story about a special dog named Duke. Told in rhyming verse, this lyrical treasure will have young readers giggling at each of Duke’s antics. The language is simple and young readers will be able to follow along and work on their own reading skills. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and add a distinct flavor and more depth to the plot. I love the way the illustrator has added animation to the images, making Duke even more loveable than the simple words suggest, and funny, too. This is a special story about a loving bond between a girl and her adopted dog. Beautifully told and suitable for very young readers.
