Tracey Barnes Priestley shares a warm and inviting story in her novel Duck Pond Epiphany. Lee MacPhearson has entered a new phase of life with the departure of her last child to college and her recent separation from Brian. A long-time believer in the power of epiphanies, she awaits clarity on how to move forward with her new life amid the uncertainty that follows an empty nest. With the support of her best friend, Barb, who is awaiting her first child, Lee tries to think of exciting adventures to try. With Barb's prompting, she dares to venture out on her first trip to New York City, where she finds a new confidence and even a touch of romance. Returning to her beautiful farm property, she works to create her new life while unforeseen complications arise. The return of her estranged son, a threat to Barb's health, the joy of Barb's new baby, and a familiar connection to Brian lead to the formation of a new type of family sharing under the same roof, with an uncertain future.
Set on a farm property with rolling lawns and a beautiful duck pond, Priestley weaves a story that reads as smoothly and comfortably as the farm itself. The descriptions are flawless pulling the reader in to experience the warmth of the MacPhearson home, the beauty of Lee's art gallery, the largeness and excitement of New York City, and the quaintness and charm of Ashland, Oregon. With deep insight into character, the reader is drawn to this flowing tale that showcases the undertones of relationships and the complexities of marriage. This story is relatable to any woman, or man, entering a new and frightening phase of life. It celebrates the power of friendship and motherhood with a loving calmness while leaving enough suspense to keep the reader flipping forward. I highly recommend this book as an accompaniment to a cup of tea on a long summer afternoon.
