Double Take is a young adult story by Laura Kennedy. Brooke Bentley’s car breaks down and she asks for assistance at a dilapidated mansion. The owner, Laura de France, is an elderly woman who was a former actress and friend of Robert Wagner and Elizabeth Taylor. Brooke accepts an invitation to her Valentine’s Day party, and soon finds herself being lavished with gifts. Laura pays for Brooke’s acting lessons, but Brooke soon realizes the reclusive actress wants to control her life. She’s neglecting her friends and studies, as she spends more time with Laura. Brooke tries to resume her normal routine, but finds it hard because Laura likes to get her way. The actress lives in the past and does not appear to be the person she claims she is.
I think Double Take is a lovely story by Laura Kennedy. It has a lot of nostalgic drama involving a few of the characters. Brooke is a normal teen who has crushes on guys and gossips with her girlfriends, but is overwhelmed by the attentions of older adults and doesn’t how how to deal with it. There’s a great deal of amusement in the story too, as Brooke is the narrator who sees the witty side of things even when it’s often serious. Laura Kennedy writes nicely and she combines classic movies and the 1950s era in a modern day plot. “All that glitters is not gold,” is a quote that comes to mind when reading Double Take.
