Meet 21-year-old Lyssa, who is fully licensed to discover, excavate, and sell planets. But being Razia, the pirate bounty hunter, is better than being Dr. Lyssandra Peate hands down, despite the fact that piracy is considered a man’s world and the unfair treatment that she receives from her pirate syndicate boss. Until Razia could make some money, Dr. Peate would have to foot the bill with yet another planet sale.
Living a double life is risky but Lyssa/Razia is doing fine, until her superior at the Planetary and System Science Academy assigns her an intern – her own younger brother Vel. She didn’t even recognize him at first, which I found hilarious. Lyssa tries her hardest to dampen Vel’s irritating enthusiasm as her intern, and trying to do her bounty hunter job as Razia becomes difficult with Vel around.
Double Life (Razia, Book 1) by S. Usher Evans takes me back to those late nights reading adventure novels as a kid. Even though the lead character Lyssa makes some questionable decisions and behaves inconveniently at times, I rooted for her every step of the way. The world building is good, although I found myself questioning the sexist culture in the futuristic piracy world. That said, it works for the plot. Evans has done a good job of making the story engaging and bringing the characters to life. Lyssa is a character who has more room to grow. With a familiar premise given a fresh spin through its storyline, Double Life is an enjoyable read.
