Don't Call Me Love: Backyard Horse Tales 3 by Jackie Anton is a children's story about a family horse called Love. This book is part of the Backyard Horse Tales series, which children will enjoy reading as they learn about the life of Love. With Love being separated from her family, she had to learn to fend for herself. She enjoys grazing in the grass and meeting the other horses, but gradually she noticed that those horses she came to enjoy and love like the young filly, Blue, suddenly disappeared. One day things changed when Love was tricked into a horse trailer and was taken on a ride. Despite the fear that Love experienced during this ride, she met Terri and they became friends. Love became Terri’s personal horse and they spent a lot of time together. They enjoyed each other's company until one day Love was abducted. She ended up being auctioned off, not as Chelsea Love but as Shady Lady. This would change Love’s life forever.
This is a beautiful children’s book that will not only educate children on the various types of horse terms from a foal, Appaloosa mare, filly, and buckskin to a cutting horse, but adults as well. What was fascinating for me is that horses are registered. Love was registered as Chelsea Love, which enabled the owners to keep track of the horse's lineage. The lovely pen and pencil illustrations helped to tell the story in the life of not only Love, but the other horses that she encountered. Also, children will learn other things, from the Appaloosa coat patterns to Ranger Breed facts. A must-have for any library.
