Donkey Show is a work of fiction in the crime and adventure subgenres. It is intended for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Stephen Baker. This fascinating caper of a novel takes us to the US-Mexico border for a wild ride filled with deceit and mystery when a bloodstained message arrives for protagonist Tom Harley. As Tom tries to understand why he's become the target of a vicious mystery figure, his travels take him across the borderlands and into a larger international puzzle that he must unpick in order to save his own life.
The typical crime story in the current market tends to pitch its plot above all else, so it was wonderful to explore this highly engaging novel which makes its people and places just as vital to the storytelling as the twists and turns themselves. I loved the atmosphere that author Stephen Baker created from scene to scene as the heat and pressure build on our protagonist Tom; every new vista added yet more grit and danger to the story as the clues unfolded. There was also an acute sense of realism to the tale which I appreciated, for even though the plot is explosively exciting when it is revealed on a wider scale, everything felt very plausible and was grounded in the realistic reactions of Tom and the amazing cast of characters he meets along the way. Overall, Donkey Show delivers on all fronts for crime fans seeking something new and original, and I’d highly recommend it.
