Dogbone Boulevard by Jeff Chaltas is a collection of one-panel cartoons, including an introduction and a personal word about the author. It is extremely moving to learn about the birth of this book and the way the idea of this book became reality thirty years after the first time Jeff submitted cartoons to editors. The pictures are all different from anything else I have seen so far and are thus quite unique and poignant. They exemplify varied types of humor and always make one smile, or even laugh out loud. It is actually one of the author’s aims, which he explains to readers in the introduction: “I know life is often hard (…) and one of my aims is to lighten your load to some degree, with a mixture of humor, amusement and pure silliness.”

I was particularly inspired by the mention of a letter of encouragement that was sent back to the author thirty years ago, and which he never forgot, and which led to this book. Dogbone Boulevard by Jeff Chaltas was made for people like me… readers who are also huge fans of Monty Python, of British humor generally speaking, what the author calls “wacky humor,” I believe. The puns, the positive messages, and the outright nonsense all make for a very enjoyable read. I particularly enjoyed the cartoon on page 13 when Fuzzball Foster tells his family he’s going to become a stand-up comedian. The cartoon (on page 19) about the first reclining comedian is also hilarious. Thank you to Jeff Chaltas for an excellent read!
