Do Nothing: A Griffin Knight Murder Mystery Thriller by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. is the first short story in what promises to be a fascinating and gritty series of crime stories involving this protagonist, Homicide Detective Griffin Knight. When Griffin is called to the scene of brutal torture and murder, he is instantly concerned when he discovers that the victim was “one of them”, District Attorney Natalie Costa. The perpetrator’s modus operandi is such that Griffin wonders if there is a new serial killer on the loose in New York City. When a similar murder is committed, Griffin is certain he has a deranged killer bent on vengeance against a particular group of people. It is his job to find the links between the victims and the killer before they have the opportunity to strike again. Good detective work and a large slice of luck combine to put Griffin on the track of this crazed maniac but can he catch and stop them in time before the next victim falls prey to the killing spree?
Do Nothing is a brilliantly written short story although it lacks much of the background setting I would have liked. That said, if crime stories are your thing, this is at the top end of the genre. I love coming across new talented authors and Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr. strikes me as being of that ilk. His story, pacing, and plotting are reminiscent of an author I consider to be the doyen of cop crime dramas, the late Ed McBain, which is high praise. I was captivated from page one and read the entire story in one continuous sitting but was left wishing it was longer with more backstories and character development. I was pleased that in his epilogue the author set the stage for the next iteration of these adventures. This is an exciting new talent and his first effort is worthy of significant praise. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and can recommend the story to cop/crime aficionados and short story lovers.
