Dissociation typically refers to a psychological defense that protects the psyche from emotionally overwhelming events. Childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and substance abuse plague American society to the extent that they are the cause of some of the most adverse effects on the health of Americans today. Through Dissociation in Late Modern America: A Defense Against Soul? Dr. Laura K. Kerr, a scholar, and former psychotherapist, presents some compelling evidence against the use of the conventional medical model to treat mental disorders, citing some reputed experts in the field. In many cases, the situations that lead to human suffering are ignored. Instead, Dr. Kerr emphasizes the importance of recognizing the psychological impact of societal problems and tackling the core aspects of dissociative trauma at its very roots.
Dissociation in Late Modern America is a timely reminder of the societal trauma that has led to a rise of increasingly erratic behavior amongst Americans today. Through this book, Dr. Laura K. Kerr attempts to understand how and why dissociation has become a dominant psychological and sociological defense in late modern America and the rest of the world. The author backs up her opinions with verifiable facts and quotes multiple well-known experts in their respective fields to reinforce her arguments. Kerr writes in an accessible style that makes the technical parts easier for readers to digest, even those with no prior experience with the subject matter. The book was illuminating, relevant, as well as being an engaging read that I highly recommend.
