Discovering the Great Teacher in You: A Guide to Mindset and Practice by Christopher M. Stabile is a guide for teachers and teachers-to-be. It is composed of great information, amazing advice and even of parables (in order to make your learning journey more vivid). For instance, the cup of tea parable teaches us what should be paramount when you want to learn: “Like this cup (…) you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?” Most books about the art of teaching focus on practice, or even best practices, but completely forget the mindset you need in order to reach your students as well as their own mindset. This is what really differentiates this guide from other guides.
Discovering the Great Teacher in You: A Guide to Mindset and Practice by Christopher M. Stabile is a guidebook which immediately caught my attention. I have been a teacher for twenty years and I have always made sure I continued to learn, to try to become a better teacher, and this book was perfect for me. What appealed to me most was the fact that this book made me think and reassess some of my thoughts through metaphors and symbols (I am a literature teacher). This book emphasizes the importance of the person-to-teacher journey and shows you how you can recognize your call to teach. It underlines the central questions we should all keep in mind when embracing this wonderful career. It is meant for teachers-to-be who will use the book as a reference before and during their transition to the classroom, but also for experienced teachers as it also illustrates practical ideas, offers reflection, reference, review and resources to increase student engagement. Everything in this amazing guidebook is meant to help you grow as a teacher and my only regret is not having found it on my path earlier!
