Dinosaur Blitz: Tales of Science Fiction, Mystery, and Romance by Gregory Urbach is an anthology that presents a unique collection of stories. The quirky writing style, charm, originality, and humor pair well with the elements of adventure, exploration, and discovery. These tales feature a range of delightful characters and quirky plots including two young dinosaurs that become inspired after watching ESPN, a comet that threatens to destroy the Earth, the final days of mankind, aliens checking out a prehistoric world, the comic adventures of Snailwoman, and a woman trying to reclaim her acting career. Other elements include end-of-the-world themes, lunar settings, and subtle commentary.
The stories are delightfully unexpected, each with an original premise, starting with Dinosaur Blitz. This story immediately sets up the offbeat tone of the whole collection with two siblings bickering over the popularity of Dino-Mania. That Which We Are reflects themes society has experienced such as the pandemic, though in this instance it is the Wasting Syndrome. The story opens with people arguing over the seriousness of it, which Gregory Urbach uses to draw you into the world that they’re living in. The anthology features the unusual and charming inclusion of a comic that has adorable illustrations and adds some levity. Another story follows a spaceship as it lands on a mysterious planet and sends its crew to embark on an epic adventure in which they explore with awe, encounter dangerous creatures (such as a crocodile), and creates the opportunity to reflect on their planet’s past when it faced terrible destruction. The unique description of the aliens adds vivid visuals as well as a humorous component to the story. The writing draws you deeper into their exploration with fragile wings, a heavy atmosphere, and a rising mountain chain with craggy rock-strew peaks. Dinosaur Blitz is a humorous, clever, and original collection of stories that feature strong themes, clever writing, exploring aliens, football-playing dinosaurs, and superhero comics.
