Digger by Arjay Lewis is a horror story with the right amount of suspense and action to send chills down my spine. Joshua Bennet was an African American born with Waardenburg Syndrome and Heterochromia. He was a newspaper journalist but he hated his job. When his father passed away and left him a hefty inheritance, Joshua packed his bags, quit his job, and sought the facts behind his father’s suspicious death. He wanted the truth and was ready to dig deep. But what Joshua found was not what he expected. He wanted closure, but it seemed like he had entered a world where monsters were not just nightmares but very real. Was Joshua ready to find out why and what killed his father? Was he prepared to face his most terrifying nightmares?

I made the wrong decision to read Digger before I went to sleep. I was not about to stop reading and finished it by 4 a.m. I was too jittery and spooked to sleep after that, so I waited for the sun to rise before I felt safe enough to sleep. It has never happened to me before, but somehow, Arjay Lewis was able to scare me, and I applaud him for that. The very first chapter introduced Lamia, and that was enough for me to feel something and get hooked on the story. It had the perfect combination of reality and supernational. Plus, Arjay added action and suspense and ensured the fast-paced narrative was filled with expressive imagery to make you feel like you were next to Joshua. The story was divided into three parts and was hard to put down. The characters were fantastic, their development was realistic, and their relationships were vital to the story. Make sure you read it in the daytime. You won’t regret it.

Anyone who enjoys dark fantasy stories featuring vampires, zombies, or ghouls will devour the book with relish. Lewis also infuses elements of Southern Gothic horror into the narrative that provide plenty of thrilling moments to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters have well-defined story arcs and personalities that make an impression on the reader. I especially enjoyed Josh's relationships with Digger and Willow. The action sequences are vividly described and filled with blood and gore. All in all, a treat for dark fantasy fans.
