Digger is a work of fiction penned by author Arjay Lewis in the horror, thriller, and mystery subgenres. It is best suited to the mature adult reading audience for its dark storytelling and monstrous themes. In this spine-tingling work, we find ourselves following African American journalist Joshua Bennet as he quits everything he’s ever known to set off on a quest into his late father’s death and tales of the undead he used to talk about. A search for a legendary gravedigger takes our investigative hero into a dangerous battle where monsters of unimaginable terror await him and all those unlucky enough to be caught up in the quest.

Author Arjay Lewis blends supernatural horror with psychological thriller elements incredibly well to deliver a double dose of atmosphere and suspense from cover to cover. I was enraptured from the earliest moments of the work by the nightmarish promises of the legends and tall tales, and the ensuing journey of mystery and discovery delivers on every chilling promise. As one should expect from a horror novel, the descriptive talent of the author is vivid and visceral, giving readers a multi-sensory experience to really put us in Joshua’s shoes as he experiences sudden twists and horrible turns whilst the ultimate fight for survival storms into being all around him. I really enjoyed the quiet moments, too, and the skillful ways in which dialogue and narrative keep you involved and looking over your shoulder for the next attack. Overall, if you’re looking for a novel to keep you awake at night for a week after reading it, I can highly recommend the dark delights of Digger as your next read.

Digger by Arjay Lewis is a horror story with the right amount of suspense and action to send chills down my spine. Joshua Bennet was an African American born with Waardenburg Syndrome and Heterochromia. He was a newspaper journalist but he hated his job. When his father passed away and left him a hefty inheritance, Joshua packed his bags, quit his job, and sought the facts behind his father’s suspicious death. He wanted the truth and was ready to dig deep. But what Joshua found was not what he expected. He wanted closure, but it seemed like he had entered a world where monsters were not just nightmares but very real. Was Joshua ready to find out why and what killed his father? Was he prepared to face his most terrifying nightmares?

I made the wrong decision to read Digger before I went to sleep. I was not about to stop reading and finished it by 4 a.m. I was too jittery and spooked to sleep after that, so I waited for the sun to rise before I felt safe enough to sleep. It has never happened to me before, but somehow, Arjay Lewis was able to scare me, and I applaud him for that. The very first chapter introduced Lamia, and that was enough for me to feel something and get hooked on the story. It had the perfect combination of reality and supernational. Plus, Arjay added action and suspense and ensured the fast-paced narrative was filled with expressive imagery to make you feel like you were next to Joshua. The story was divided into three parts and was hard to put down. The characters were fantastic, their development was realistic, and their relationships were vital to the story. Make sure you read it in the daytime. You won’t regret it.

If you enjoy TV shows like Supernatural, grab a copy of Digger by Arjay Lewis. After receiving news of his father's unexpected passing, Joshua Bennet, a young African American journalist, sets off to investigate his father's mysterious death and search for the gravedigger who appeared at his funeral. Traversing the sites of past supernatural events leads Josh to a man named Digger, who he later learns used to be Josh's father's former monster-hunting partner. Soon, Digger takes Josh under his wing, and the duo embarks on a cross-country trip fighting zombies and vampires unleashed by the Moonwa, rescuing a young woman named Willow. But now, Digger must be prepared to embrace his destiny and wield the legendary Lahat Chereb to face off against the demon Gremory and her army of ghouls. However, an even bigger threat awaits.

Digger is a wild rollercoaster of a ride you don't want to end. Arjay Lewis's action-packed novel is pure box office entertainment from start to finish. Anyone who enjoys dark fantasy stories featuring vampires, zombies, or ghouls will devour the book with relish. Lewis also infuses elements of Southern Gothic horror into the narrative that provide plenty of thrilling moments to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters have well-defined story arcs and personalities that make an impression on the reader. I especially enjoyed Josh's relationships with Digger and Willow. The action sequences are vividly described and filled with blood and gore. All in all, a treat for dark fantasy fans.
