Different Like Me by Lisa DeFini Lohmann is a delightful, heartfelt story about a dog named Wilson Highstep. Wilson lived in a front cage in the pet store, and on weekends was able to see all of the families coming through to choose their new dog to take home. But Wilson was never chosen, no matter how hard he tried to get everyone's attention, and he was soon taken to the back cages. He missed all of his friends, and especially the kids on the weekends. How will Wilson be able to cope living in the back, darker section of the pet store? And then one day, a magical thing happens to Wilson that changes his life forever.
In Different Like Me, the main character is Wilson. Wilson was a sweet dog that I loved from the start but he was different, and this is why he wasn't chosen as a family pet. Author Lisa DeFini Lohmann does a very nice job of relating these differences in this book. These little dog characters were so realistic I kept thinking they were people. And I really loved meeting the adorable real-life Wilson. This is a very well written book by Ms. Lohmann, one that teaches children that God gave them all their own special gifts to be different. And Richa Kinra created illustrations that help tell the story so well. In fact, I loved them so much I kept going back and looking at them. Different Like Me is beautiful inside and out and should be in any library where there are children. And if you know children that may be a bit different from others, this would be an excellent gift for them.
