Did Success Spoil Jayne Mansfield? follows her life from birth to death. The author has included plenty of photos which compliment the text. We all look at Hollywood stars through rose colored glasses. Few of us know their true existence. Producers expect a star to be perfect: perfect hair, weight, body and if you have a child you must get your shape back quickly.
If I had to choose two words to describe Mansfield off screen, I’d use needy and lonely. She needed someone with her all the time and she tried to hide her loneliness in alcohol and pills. She lost her father when she was only three years old, and his passing left a void in her life. This may be why she sought different men. Perhaps she was looking for a father figure.
The pictures are all black and white, and while some are good quality, many are grainy. However, they do give us a good pictorial biography. It is obvious that the author did extensive research on the topic. The author became friends with Mansfield’s children. This book should help keep her memory alive.
