From the first chapter of Devil’s Den, it becomes obvious that something happened among a group of Civil War veterans led by a man called Captain. Whatever happened, someone is willing to kill to keep it quiet. From that moment on it is a mystery wrapped in yet another mystery as the reader, along with Seth Armitage, wonders why the current administration even cares about the murders of a bunch of old vets. Timothy Ashby presents an enigmatic story of government corruption, misconduct and everything else the nation experienced during the 1920s. It was a time of change and everything from the dialogue to the characters makes us perfectly aware of that fact, particularly as Seth has to deal with an up and coming young man by the name of J. Edgar Hoover.
Devil’s Den is a masterful story set against the backdrop of racial strife, a corrupt administration and the mystery of who would want to kill Civil War veterans and why. Ashby presents us with a truly compelling character in the obviously shell shocked but very astute Seth Armitage. There are also quite a few shady but memorable secondary characters including Brooks, Peggy, the Klan and even the FBI as an institution in its formative years. Combining history and fiction made this a thrilling read from start to finish, especially the ever twisting and turning mystery. Timothy Ashby has written a remarkable story with an intriguing plot, real-life characters and a depth that will keep you thinking about it long after the story is over.
